Day 6: Discovering Ciudad Rodrigo
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel to start your day.
Morning: Travel by private vehicle to Ciudad Rodrigo for a guided tour of the town’s highlights and traditions, including a visit to an Iberic ham drying room, then return to Salamanca.
On the border with Portugal, just forty-five minutes from Salamanca, lies Ciudad Rodrigo. A town whose history assigned it the role of border sentinel. Rebuilt in the Middle Ages and named after its founder, Count Rodrigo González Girón, it has historically been the military capital of the province. Its medieval and baroque walls enclose one of the most beautiful urban areas to be found in Spain.
The city invites you to stroll endlessly through its streets and to return for its most iconic celebrations: the Carnaval del Toro and the Castile and León Theatre Fair at the end of August. Its human-scale size allows visitors to quickly discover its most important architectural landmarks.
The Cathedral, which began as Romanesque and was completed in Neoclassical style, was built over several centuries, from the 12th to the 18th. Inside, it preserves valuable spaces such as the Pórtico del Perdón, a Gothic masterpiece, a curious medieval cloister, and a magnificent 15th-century wooden choir.
The list of Plateresque palaces that embellish every corner of Ciudad Rodrigo is endless. Most were built in the 16th century, with highlights like the Águila Palace, which features a spectacular Renaissance courtyard.
As you walk through the town, you’ll also come across the impressive funerary chapel of the Marquises of Cerralbo, the size of a grand church, and presiding over the town’s two kilometers of defensive walls is the 14th-century medieval castle of King Henry II, now converted into a Parador Nacional (a state-run luxury hotel).
In the surrounding area, a must-see is the Siega Verde Archaeological Site, considered the largest collection of Paleolithic rock engravings in Spain and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Afternoon: Private transfer to and from your pickleball session.
